Back in February 2020, Hyundai had officially revealed the 2020 i20 hatchback in international markets but that was in digital format with any real life images mostly camouflaged. Now, the hatchback has finally been spotted in real life in the clearest exterior angles without a disguise. And we have to say, the official digital images just don’t do justice to the major upgrade it has undergone over its predecessor.
We already know via official digital images that the next-gen i20 gets a modern and sharper design thanks to the carmaker’s Sensuous Sportiness design language. It features cosmetic updates like a single-piece cascading grille, sleek LED headlamps, 17-inch alloy wheels, and triangle-shaped air dams. The India-spec i20 is likely to come with 16-inch wheels, instead of 17-inch alloy wheels. The rear gets a new bumper, followed by connected LED tail lamps. Dimensions-wise, the new i20 is 5mm longer, 30mm wider, and 24mm shorter than the current international-spec hatchback. Even the wheelbase has been increased by 10mm.
Earlier spy shots of the cabin reveal a design similar to the global spec i20. Highlights include a 10.25-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system extending to the instrument cluster Audi-esque aircon vents and a 4-spoke steering wheel. Other interesting features on offer are BlueLink connected car technology, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, a Bose sound system, a wireless charger and drive modes. Most of these features could make their way into the India-spec 2020 i20.
Under the hood, the India-spec 2020 Hyundai i20 will be powered by two BS6-compliant engines. The first engine option is a 1.0-litre T-GDI turbo-petrol that could put out 120PS and 172Nm. The other engine option is a 1.5-litre CRDI diesel that could produce 100PS. Transmission duties could be taken care of by a 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT for the petrol option, with the diesel engine likely to get only a manual option.
Expect the 2020 Hyundai i20 to debut in India by mid-2020, with a launch possibly after August 2020. It will most likely be launched at a hefty premium over the current i20, which is priced from Rs 5.60 lakh (ex-showroom), due to the upgrades on offer. It will take on the likes of the Tata Altroz, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza, and Honda Jazz.
